Michiel Claassen studied State and Administrative Law, as well as International Law at the University of Leiden and at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. Michiel was sworn in 2001 as a lawyer in The Hague, where he started his career as a lawyer at the state attorney's office. After completing his attorneyship, Michiel switched to the Ministry of Finance, Financial Markets Directorate, where he was involved, among other things, in the creation of the Financial Supervision Act (Wft).
Since early 2007, Michiel has been a lawyer at AKD. He started within the government and enterprise practice group in Rotterdam. Currently he is a member of the Banking & Finance practice group in Amsterdam, where he deals primarily with financial legislation. This varies from financial supervisory legislation to education and care funding, and grants. In the context of financial supervision, Michiel assists financial service providers in compliance issues: what rules apply, the company complies with the rules and, if not, how can the company be made compliant. Where appropriate, he assists financial service providers in (objection) proceedings against De Nederlandse Bank (DNB) or the Dutch Financial Markets Authority (AFM).
In the context of public funding such as educational benefits, Michiel assists both education and care institutions as well as public authorities in disputes or with advice on funding and decentralisation. In addition, he helps companies and governments with subsidy issues. For companies, this often means support in the application or with opposition/appeal against refusal and recovery decisions.
Michiel is a member of the Association for Securities Law (VVER) and the Association for Administrative Law (VAR), he regularly publishes in the field of financial law and he is co-author of the Sdu Comments General Administrative Law Act.
